Madrid's metro stations: Sevilla & Sol

on | |

Last Sunday I went to spend the day around the city centre of Madrid (maybe one of the most tourist areas). We were around Sevilla metro station and Sol (where the Spanish zero kilometre is). We also went to see a Monet exposition about abstractism and drink some natural fruit juices, which were really needed because it was too hot (it is unbelievable how the weather had suddenly changed from cold to hot… we almost have not had spring season!).
Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. It has about 3.3 million of population and its metropolitan area has more than 6 million of population. It is the third most populous city in European Union after London and Berlin.
The photo above represents “The Bear and the Strawberry Tree” (the original name of the tree is ‘Madroño’ whose berries are red like strawberries but they are too sweet and not good for being eaten, but are only good for making jam). It is situated at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. It is the symbol of the city (it is on the Madrid flag) and it is made of bronze by sculptor Antonio Navarro Santafe in 1966 and inaugurated one year later.

In Sevilla metro station from Madrid, it is situated Bilbao Bank (Alcala, 16) and Banesto Bank (Alcala, 14).
Bilbao Bank’s architect was Ricardo Bastida and it was built from 1920 to 1923.
I really admire its columns, capitals and the sculptures of the main façade.

The architect for Credit Bank of Spain (Banesto) was Jose Riera Grases and it was built from 1882 to 1892. I really like this building; I could say it is one of my favourites after Metropolis. It is a very eclectic original and I admire their sculptures as elephant heads from the first floor balcony. Also like the old street-lights like s XIX. (I am quite obsessed with this century; I love the film scenarios and the architecture from s. XIX).

The Puerta del Sol (“Gate of the Sun”) is one of the most well known places in Madrid. There is the famous clock whose bells mark the beginning of a new year and which is broadcast live on TV since 1962. The name of the gate came from the rising sun, which decorated the entry since the gate was oriented to the east. There is the old Post Office built by Jacques Marquet (s. XVIII). There is also the Km 0 which symbolizes the centre of Spain because it starts the Spanish roads system.
